The Mystery Of Mermaids

A Mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. They appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The “Siren” of Ancient Greek Mythology had been combined with “Mermaids” during the medieval period. In the early Greek period, the sirens were considered as human-headed birds, but by the classical period, the Greeks occasionally depicted the siren as ‘part fish' in art. The siren's part-fish appearance became increasingly popular during the Middle Ages. And the traits of the classical sirens, such as using their beautiful song as a lure has often been transferred to mermaids. The earliest text describing the siren as fish-tailed occurs in the Liber Monstrorum de diversis generibus (7th–mid 8th century), which described sirens as "sea girls" (marinae pullae) whose beauty and sweet song allure sailors, but beneath the human head and torso, they have the scaly tail-end of a fish with which they can navigate the sea.

While there is no evidence that mermaids exist outside folklore, reports of mermaid sightings continue to the present day, which are never proved yet! Many sailors claimed the sightings of mermaids, but these claims are often dismissed by scientists due to lack of evidence. One of the popular reported sighting of three mermaids by Christopher Columbus in 1493 was also dismissed as the sighting of manatees.

The psychological reason behind these sightings could be Barney's "Mermaid Theory", that :

“A man will eventually want to sleep with any woman after a period of time, no matter how initially repugnant. Sailors would spend so long at sea that they would eventually come to view manatees as beautiful mermaids. A mermaid will become unattractive (turn into a big ugly manatee) again by becoming pregnant. However, she will become a mermaid once again by breastfeeding.”

At present, you can find many videos on the internet claiming “Real Mermaid Caught On A Camera", many photos claiming ”Real Mermaid Found On Beach" or “Real Mermaid’s Fossil". But most of them are either Fake or is just a Misunderstanding.

For example, what do you think of these pictures below :

All these videos are clips from Animal Planet's docu-fiction - “Mermaids : The Body Found" (2012) and it's sequel “Mermaids : The New Evidence” (2013). Animal Planet didn't showed the disclaimer that it was fictional and was criticized worldwide.

Many people are using her videos as a proof that mermaids actually exist!

Now, let's come to the Scientific Explanation :

According to a popular marine science website DeepSeaNews, five of the primary reasons listed as why mermaids can't exist are:

  1. Thermoregulation (Adaptations For Regulating Body Heat);
  2. Evolutionary Mismatch;
  3. Reproductive Challenges;
  4. Digestive Differences Between Mammals And Fish;
  5. Lack Of Physical Evidence.

As of 15th July, 2022 (According To National Geographic) - “more than 80 percent of the ocean has never been mapped, explored, or even seen by humans. A far greater percentage of the surfaces of the moon and the planet Mars has been mapped and studied than of our own ocean floor. More than 90 percent of the ocean’s species are still undiscovered, with some scientists estimating that there are anywhere between a few hundred thousand and a few million more to be discovered.”

So, there is a possibility that this mystery will be uncovered in future.

But the biggest question is :

What will the humans do to mermaids if they found them ?

How will the mermaids react ?

Will they be our friends or enemies ?

And also, it will be interesting to know that the famous ancient “Legends” about mermaids are true or not!
