FACT : The Bhangarh Fort is managed and maintained by Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and most of the monuments protected by ASI remain open for visitors only from Sunrise to Sunset. Bhangarh is no exception. It’s just that people mistake the official signboard regarding the timing as an official declaration of Bhangarh being haunted by ghosts.

MYTH : Many people claimed of parnormal experiences and hearing some strange voices coming from the fort at night, believing it as a ghost!

FACT : Gaurav Tiwari (founder of Indian Paranormal Society) and his team went to the fort with Aaj Tak (Indian News Channel) and found nothing paranormal, claiming - “The strange voices could be the result of monkeys and other wild animals roaming in the fort, as it is located on the border of Sariska Reserve in the Aravalli Range of Hills.”

MYTH :

Legend : 1 - There was a sadhu, Guru Balu Nath, living on top of the hill on which the fort was built. His only condition for letting the fort be built there was that it should never cast a shadow on his dwelling. This condition was honoured by all the kings except Ajab Singh, then ruler of Bhangarh, who added columns to the fort that cast a shadow on the sadhu’s house. The angry sadhu’s curse led to the ruin of the fort and the surrounding villages. A small stone hut, known as tantrik ki chatri, overlooks the fort.

Legend : 2 - A tantrik priest, Singhia, adept in black magic, fell in love with Ratnavati, a beautiful Bhangarh princess, with many suitors. One day, the wizard saw the princess’ maid buying perfume for her in the village, he cast a spell on it so that Ratnavati would fall in love with him too. Ratnavati came to know of this and threw the bottle onto a large rock that consequently rolled onto the wizard and crushed him to death. Before he died, the tantrik priest cursed the entire village, condemning it to destruction and desolation.

FACT : These are legends, not the actual history. They had evolved over the time and have no mention in any historic text, so they can’t be trusted.
